Bathroom Update - Week Six

I know you're all wondering what happened during last weekend's remodeling project. Ben was here for a visit and we had lots of fun putting him to work. (Sorry for the sideways clip. I gotta quit doing that!)

In this clip, the guys are joking about how Ben keeps almost cutting his finger off. I'm not biting, but they're really trying hard to pull it off.

This week's project came about as we'd walked around the bathroom for the last week. There were parts of the floor that were really spongy. The plywood subfloor would dip down at least 1/2 inch or more. So the first thing Warren and I did was discuss whether the dipping would be "masked" by the thick concrete backer board that goes on top. We decided most places the dipping would probably would be fixed by the backer board, but in the area in front of the sinks, where we stand all the time, we'd better take it down to the studs and start over.
So that's what we did. First we had to decide how big to make the hole. Then Warren cut it out with a circular saw. Ben wasn't up yet at this point--we let him sleep in--but you can guess he was up soon after the sawing started!

You can see the dust on the lens from the circular saw here. I had to clean it off before I took more pictures.

This shows how Warren used a crowbar to pull up sections of the area he'd cut out with the circular saw. The plywood was glued onto the studs below so each section had to be FORCED up. Lots of work.

Here's the hole we ended up with. We were committed now!

The next part of the project involved adding 2 x 6 inch side beams on which to rest the new plywood subfloor.

We finally had the new subfloor in.

Good job, guys! I appreciate having a floor again--even a subfloor is better than that hole!

You guys sure are ambitious. It is important to do those things right, though. Hubby used to take forever to do projects in our old home, but the results were always beautiful, so it was worth it.

How are you doing living with all the construction? I remember as a child that my parents put in new carpeting. The house was old with a crawl space underneath, and the old subfloor was in poor shape and the entire thing had to be replaced. We spent several days in the hotel in the closest town (about six miles away), partially because I'm asthmatic and couldn't deal with the dust generated from pulling up the old flooring and cutting the new.

Amazing work!! I loved seeing the pictures of Ben - I miss him!! I am impressed at replacing the subflooring - but I agree if you are gonna do a job - do it right!! It doesn't seem so hard watching it in stages!

Apologies if you can't see the video clip. It was working last night! I don't understand why it isn't working today!

Kaycie--The construction does bother my asthma. But we run air cleaners on high and keep the door closed with a sheet hung over for another layer of shielding. I rarely go in there, but if I do it's with a mask on. I wear one on construction day, of course.

We have another full bath on this floor so we aren't in there much. No toilet or shower in there now to use anyway. We pulled the shower doors off and will replace them at the end of the project.

Laura--we had a great time with Ben. He's such a fun guy with an amazingly generous spirit.

Hi Mom! I had a BLAST helping you guys with that project. I should be home again at Easter so make sure there's still some work left for me. Love you!

That is some sweet boy you've got there.

I didn't know you were asthmatic when I asked my question. Bless your heart. Do you have to use an inhaler? I hadn't used one for probably 15 years, then when I was about 35 I got pneumonia one winter. I was on an inhaler for what seemed like forever and I still keep it filled, just in case. I get a pneumonia shot now, as well, every five years. I think I'm due, as a matter of fact.
