Quick! Grab the Sleds! It's Snowing!

We woke up to snow this morning. Thick, wet, perfect for snowmen and snowballs, and sledding. Our hill is the most popular hill on the block so a bunch of kids spend part of the morning sledding and playing in the snow.

Since it's headed for 50 degrees this afternoon, they were smart to get out there this morning. Not much will be left by this evening.

I didn't get any sledding pics since I was out of batteries for my camera. But when we got home from the store and loaded up our camera, we got some great shots of their handiwork. Have you ever seen mini-snowmen with whole cloves for the features?

Look closely at the Warren and Marcia snow people. Mine has a flower on her hat (since I'm a big gardener, this makes sense). Warren's has a cheesehead hat (we did live in Wisconsin for a while once) and a straw mustache.

What fun!

Thanks for the Snow People, Kids!

Bathroom Update - Week Seven

THE WEEK NOTHING HAPPENS IN THE BATHROOM PROJECT

Yup! Nothing to report. Other things going on. We decided not to stress about it.

Warren was asked to be one of the judges for the Polar Bear Plunge down at the Lake of the Ozarks. Some years he's actually participated in the Plunge. Since the weather was so cold on Saturday, he was mighty glad he was just judging.

So he was down at the Lake on Saturday morning instead of working on the bathroom project.

The Polar Bear Plunge is where people volunteer to plunge in the Lake of the Ozarks--whatever the temperature--in the middle of February. Part of what Warren and the guys were doing on the Billboard was promoting the Polar Bear Plunge.

People get pledges from friends and family and then dress up in silly costumes for the Plunge.

Randy Warner, one of the Billboard Campers who shared that whole experience with Warren earlier this week actually participated in half of the SuperPlunger Event. The SuperPlungers went in once an hour for 24 hours. Not THAT is brutal when the air temperature is in the teens and 20s. Yikes!

Randy and Warren hanging out in the houseboat used to help keep Super Plungers warm during the 24-hour event.

Overall, Warren thinks they've probably raised well over $100,000 for Special Olympics. Pretty impressive, don't you think?! Lots of people with big hearts, I would say!

Freezing for a Reason

My husband, Warren, spent 30 hours this week on a billboard in town, temperature in the teens. The reason? Special Olympics, which has always had a special place in his heart. This year the weather was a factor. Last year they sat on lawn chair in sweat shirts. This year, Warren wore every high-tech article of clothing he owned and some low-tech, too, including two pairs of running tights, sweat pants, and ski pants.

He's been doing this for several years. They shoot for $10,000 in funds raised. I think this is pretty remarkable when you realize there is no phone bank, no one answering calls and taking pledges. People have to be motivated to drive over to the local Coke building and drop off a check or cash. How many people have to do this to raise ten thousand dollars in 30 hours? Gotta be loads of folks.

Warren started on Friday afternoon using one of the station vehicles to haul all the radio equipment down to the Coke billboard. Actually, the billboard is on top of a building with windows into another part of the building. So all the radio equipment spent the weekend locked up inside.

Sunday afternoon, Warren began gathering all his survival equipment for the event. This included two sleeping bags, an inflatable mattress, a small tent with built-in floor, hand warmers, at least 10 articles of clothing including parka and ski pants, all his cold-weather running things, socks, hiking boots, you name it. And don't forget the scarves, mittens and gloves, hats and hood!

He left around 4 am on Monday morning which is normal for him. But this time he was on the Coke building in front of the billboard. By 6 am, Warren's radio show began.

The wind blew the entire time, lowering the windchill to dangerous levels. Even if you're from the northern realms, you would have thought it was frigid up there on that billboard!

The fun part of this charity event is that lots of local businesses send food and beverages down for the people on the roof and at ground level. Hamburgers, tacos, burritos, rolls, cookies, chips, french fries... After the radio show was done, they spent the rest of Monday waving at cars, talking on the radio every hour or so to encourage more drivers to stop by with donations. Special Olympics or the local police officers or county officers had people groundside to collect the money and keep a running total.

Someone had to hold the antennae up every time they tried to talk into the mike because the wind was so fierce it wanted to blow it off the roof. One time Warren's chair and papers were blown off the roof. Someone on the ground retireved them and hauled them back up the ladder.

Warren's face is still red from wind chapping. I think the hardest part of the day was seeing the Central Bank's big thermometer right across the street. They knew they were cold but the almost single digit temperature reading across the street amplified the coldness.

That night, they all turned in early in their separate tents and slept till 5 am when they got up and started all over again until noon on Tuesday. Warren did his morning radio show again, they all waved at honking cars some more, ate some more, braved the cold and wind some more, and RAISED OVER TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!

Bravo, Guys! Good job for a good cause!

Bathroom Update - Week Six

I know you're all wondering what happened during last weekend's remodeling project. Ben was here for a visit and we had lots of fun putting him to work. (Sorry for the sideways clip. I gotta quit doing that!)

In this clip, the guys are joking about how Ben keeps almost cutting his finger off. I'm not biting, but they're really trying hard to pull it off.

This week's project came about as we'd walked around the bathroom for the last week. There were parts of the floor that were really spongy. The plywood subfloor would dip down at least 1/2 inch or more. So the first thing Warren and I did was discuss whether the dipping would be "masked" by the thick concrete backer board that goes on top. We decided most places the dipping would probably would be fixed by the backer board, but in the area in front of the sinks, where we stand all the time, we'd better take it down to the studs and start over.
So that's what we did. First we had to decide how big to make the hole. Then Warren cut it out with a circular saw. Ben wasn't up yet at this point--we let him sleep in--but you can guess he was up soon after the sawing started!

You can see the dust on the lens from the circular saw here. I had to clean it off before I took more pictures.

This shows how Warren used a crowbar to pull up sections of the area he'd cut out with the circular saw. The plywood was glued onto the studs below so each section had to be FORCED up. Lots of work.

Here's the hole we ended up with. We were committed now!

The next part of the project involved adding 2 x 6 inch side beams on which to rest the new plywood subfloor.

We finally had the new subfloor in.

Good job, guys! I appreciate having a floor again--even a subfloor is better than that hole!

Sarah's "New" H & J

Our darling daughter, Sarah, has been in the hospital for a few days. Long story. Short version, she needs a repeat procedure involving one of the bile ducts. Lots of pain put her in the hospital on Friday night. Procedure was done on Monday. She's recuperating now. Hopefully will be home soon and recovering. Usually takes two weeks of really laying low, then at least another couple months before you feel decent again.

But that's not what this story is about. This story is about Henry and Jackson, who've visited this blog before. See here. If you glance to the side of this page, you'll see the oil paintings we commissioned of our two cats, Mr. Hamilton and Miss Ellie. Recently we asked the artist, Nance DeClue, to do a portrait of Sarah's cats. It didn't get done in time for Christmas. But as things sometimes happen, it did get done in time to be presented to a groggy-on-pain-meds woman who was missing her cats and quite sick of being in the hospital. It was perfect timing and we couldn't have pulled this off as well if we'd planned it.

You can see her reaction here. She had no idea what we were going to pull out of that box. The oil painting has several more months to "cure" before it can be framed.

Thank, you, Nance, for all your talent and effort! You made Sarah very happy and brightend her gloomy day!

Here's a nice article about Nance.

Romance at My Age..

...is a wonderful thing! These pretty flowers arrived at the office. Then last evening we had a very nice dinner at a local winery with a window view to the surrounding countryside. Beautiful day, beautiful night, beautiful man!

Thanks, Honey!

A Couple of Cats

Miss Ellie looks all cumfy here, doesn't she? Ha! Looks can be deceiving. Notice the hairy eyeball burning a hole in my shirt? Notice how she's hiding behind that tail? This is because Miss Ellie is "recovering" from an encounter with Diamond, that feral cat who lives next door. The way Warren tells the story, he'd let her out on the back deck. Miss Ellie usually goes down to the bottom of the stairs, munches on a bit of grass, then comes back inside and ralphs on the carpet. Great noontime routine.

This time she came streaking back up the stairs and flew in the house and disappeared upstairs, probably under the bed.

The rest of the story? Diamond wasn't far behind. Good thing Warren was sitting in the den, waiting for the solvent to do its job on the bathroom floor. He said Diamond pretty much had one foot in the door and was about to give chase all the way upstairs, but was held off by Warren's rattling a chair. Diamond is so wild, she will go after a human in the way. But she thought better of it this time and took off back down the deck stairs.

Now you know why Miss Ellie is hiding behind her tail. If I can't see "them," except for my watchful eye, then "they" can't see me.

This photo shows Hamilton perched on the dining room window sill. Warren says Hamilton is "Watching the Food Channel." Have you guessed there are several bird feeders outside this window?

Thanks for the Mwah!

First award for the Two CAT Blog comes from Laurie over at Three DOG Blog. As a Cat Person, I know I've really made it if I'm touted by a Dog Person! I enjoy reading your stories, Laurie, and aspire to write as well as you.

Thank you, Laurie! I'm tickled pink!

Bathroom Project Update - Week Five

Glue is Gone!

Week Five is over, ending before noon, as usual. We started, or I should say, Warren started at around 8 am. The floor was covered with alleyways of nasty particle-board-speckled mastic glue. Nasty. If you scroll down and look at earlier weeks, you can see the ridges formed by the glue.

The process involves brushing a solvent over the stripes of glue gunk, covering with plastic sheeting, waiting for at least a half hour, then scraping the softened mess into trash bags. The fumes were horrible, so I spent the morning out of the house. Warren had a fan going in the window, both windows wide open to ventilate. If you use enough of the solvent and wait long enough, the scraping part is relatively easy. Just smelly.

By the end of the morning, every bit of the glue was gone. The floor is now ready for leveling and attaching concrete board.

Here you can see the cleared floor, the wetness of the glue still apparent. By nightfall, the worst of the smell was already gone. The next step was measuring from the floor to the top of the hardwood in the bedroom. We want the transition from tile to hardwood to be as even as possible. So we have to add the thickness of the cement backer board, the mastic, and the tile, to be sure. Right now we have NO IDEA how thick the mastic would be so we still aren't sure how thick the backer board will be. That's the "job" for this week.

Next weekend, Ben will be home for a short visit. Whoo! Hoo! He was hoping to help us lay tile. Won't be happening, but now Warren has come up with another idea. They may work together next Saturday morning removing the popcorn ceiling in the bathroom and repainting the ceiling. Sounds like a good plan to me! I'll "supervise."

Think Spring!

My son, Ben, asked for photos. I didn't think I had any. However, after looking through what I did have saved on an older external hard drive, I found photos of my garden from a couple years ago. So here they are. Guaranteed to make you pine away for spring, I think!

Mr. Hamilton the Movie Star

Part of the saga of the Computer Meltdown is the purchase of a new computer. Since I'm a Mac girl, I now have this fantastic iMovie studio in my computer.

Huh. Now I have to learn how to use it. So what better subject matter than Mr. Hamilton? It took me a while to figure this all out, but here is my first movie, all 21 seconds of it. Starring none other than Mr. Hamilton, that totally natural movie star himself. I took this over a year ago when I first got my digital video camera. Now with my iMovie studio, can Hollywood be far behind?

Oh, and yes, some day I'll tell you all about the Computer Meltdown...well, or maybe not...

Bathroom Project Update - Week Four

Not much got done this Saturday morning. It's been the week from Hades. Nothing's gone right and I'm glad I'm about to enter a new week. Maybe this one will treat us kinder.

The main reason deserves a blog of its own. Let me just say, Computer Meltdown. The end of the story is, I have a new laptop and have yet to know if the data on my old hard drive will be retrieved. It's still at the shop.

Saturday morning, Warren was at the America Legion here in town at the annual Navy Club Chili Contest. This is a charity event that raises money to send a kid with cancer to summer camp. Big success--a good amount of money was raised. Warren didn't win, which is tradition, but everyone had a good time and lots of chili was eaten by all. The county commissioners who judged all found dollar bills taped to Warren's cups of chili. They all had a big laugh, which is also part of the day. If he's not going to win, he figures why not have fun.

Saturday afternoon we drove back up to Columbia to pick up my new laptop and I'm spending the rest of the weekend trying to remember WHAT I had bookmarked, remember passwords, download my website's html code and images, download Kompozer, download Graphic Converter... It's a NIGHTMARE! I'm crossing my fingers I can get the family photos back in the retrieval attempt, but won't know that till the middle of next week.

Now, if I can just get the right adapter so I can hook up my wide screen computer monitor. You can bet I'll be at Best Buy this morning at 10 am sharp! Trying to put a "good" cap on this week seems almost impossible. I'm still trying!

Warren did get some of the nasty glue off the plywood subfloor during the week, and may do more of that today. We slept in till 8 o'clock this morning, which is really rare for Warren. He gets up at 3 am in the morning during the week. He's going to have a terrible time getting any sleep tonight, what with sleeping so late this morning and the Super Bowl tonight.

Oh well, there's always Tuesday, always another week... We sure hope this one goes better than last week!
