It's "Officially" Spring!

I abhor winter. I search for signs of Spring as early as January. Yup, as soon as the calendar swings around into the new year, I'm ready for Spring. This year, as with last year, we've had lots more winter than Missouri usually sees. So it's been grim around here in my search for the first sign of Spring.

But I now declare, IT'S OFFICIAL, SPRING IS HERE!

I don't care if they had 10 inches of SNOW in St. Louis this Tuesday or 4 inches over on the east side of my town on Wednesday. The blizzards raging through Ohio this weekend don't bother me a bit.

because I've found SPRING!

This little plot is located outside of where I work. It's a 3 x 9 foot patch of raw earth. For a gardener like me, I see a blank canvas waiting to be painted. Just last week, I was telling Warren how we were going to come over here soon on a weekend and level the dirt out and start PLANTING!

I've walked past this garden plot every day, dreaming and planning, looking at the dirt, wondering if it was old construction fill or if it has any topsoil with nutrients in it or if we'd have to haul some good earth over here along with the bulbs and seeds and mulch. I'm thinking we can split out some of my most prolific perennials and bring them here.

Then a couple of days ago, a faint shimmer of GREEN caught my eye as I walked up the ramp. I stopped in my tracks. What is that? Oh, wow! It's green! Some thing's growing in Missouri! Even though the green is weeds, I don't care. My long quest for a sign of Spring is over. I don't have to look anymore.

SPRING IS HERE!

Never mind the blizzards, people. The snow has already melted in St. Louis. It will melt in Ohio, too. Spring has definitely grabbed hold of the calendar and even though winter is not giving up without a fight, I know now that Spring will prevail.

Let's hear it for SPRING!

you have no idea how much i crave the sight of green right about now.

i am taking my mom to the como conservatory today (if her cold will allow it--she's been pretty sick) and we will just sit on a bench and breath in the moist and pollen-filled air...

Laurie: I read on your site how you and your Mom were going to the observatory. I can sooo relate to that! Having lived up north for more than half of my life, I remember the grimness of late winter. It's not quite so bad here in Missouri, although winter is winter, if you ask me! I wish you a happy day at Como with your Mom!

I completely relate. About three weeks ago I went into the garage where I keep my pots in the winter. After the move, I hadn't emptied them, just stowed them under the work bench. There were little shoots, pale green and tiny, but they were there. I had trimmed the greenery off last springs bulbs and never took them out of the pot. You should have seen the rejoicing!

I went right out and bought violas, planted up some empty pots, and put my three pots of bulbs out. I've nearly got daffodils outside on the front porch. Yes!

Kaycie, Yes! This is the best reason for moving south! Spring comes earlier and stays longer than in the colder northern states.I lived so long up north and suffered through so many northern winters, that the milder southern winters still bring it all back to me. But the SPRING makes it all worthwhile. I'm envious of your daffodils. Hey, wait, maybe I should go check out my garden. Do you think???

My daffodil poked its little yellow head out today!

Jealous! Minnesota is entered its cruelest time -- it's all hint and flirt, no real action.

Thanks, Laurie! What fun! I'm going to have to check out that bookmooch site out!

Minnesota Matron - I love your description of "spring" in Minnesota. I lived there for many years, Minneapolis, St. Paul, even New Hope. I remember that Hint and Flirt cycle. Drove us crazy. Here in Missouri, there's much more action!

Kaycie - Lucky You! I went and looked by my mailbox where all the early flowers bloom--nothing yet. Just too hopeful, I guess, wanting to hurry spring along this year more than most. We've had waaay tooo much snow down here--two years in a row now! Yikes!
